The works of Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso entail either recreating scenarios inspired by paintings by artists from the Baroque and Neoclassical eras in Europe or portraying contemporary scenery and actors in a classical manner. In these works, the viewer will find rich detail consistently covered in brushwork which emulates a sfumato. The immense refinement expressed in the facial structure and muscles of Gabriela’s figures are reminiscent of the unique qualities contained in the paintings of the master of masters, Peter Paul Rubens. Not only are the figures handled with great care but the satin, silk, and linen fabrics of her figures contain a delicate luminosity as if the attire were alive. The vibrant colors and transparency contained within the fiber of these delicate dresses, clothing, table cloths, and drapery contain a sociological analogy about refinement and revealing a sense of dignity towards her characters emanating within the paintings.

Like Rubens, Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso enhances the theatrical aspects of her paintings, not just through chiaroscuro and immense detail, but also in accentuating and even exaggerating the facial expressions of her actors. The delicate fabrics contained within Gabriela’s works with their luminous sheen and dynamic, rich colors seem to reflect the focal point and even conceptual avenue of the works, such as in the case of the painting discussed in the next paragraph.

Mending the Flag (pictured above) remains a perfect example of Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso’s talent with her portrayal of fabrics. With rich colors and delicate yet vibrant brushstrokes, the American flag seems to accidentally drape the figure similar to an elaborate ballroom dress against her lap and legs as she works on sewing the symbol. The symbolic metaphor accentuates a sense of glory towards the standard of the flag to represent an expression of grand attire worthy of superb engagement and enhanced iconography.

Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso creates rich paintings steeped into the psychology of her figures specifically through chiaroscuro, intense facial structure, and vibrant fabrics which seem to convey a life of their own. Her symbolism and sense of metaphor portray quaint interiors and landscapes which enhance and communicate a historic atmosphere, followed by her unique representation of sfumato. These theatrical, psychological portraits and intimate scenes display both a contemporary inclination through postmodern symbolism and attire with a homage to classical masters through the use of delicate detail and choreographed lighting, as if her figures were acting out a scene in a photographer’s studio or presented on a stage of grand theatre. Through diligence, sophistication, and refinement, Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso utilizes contemporary painting as a form of grand entertainment akin not only to neoclassicism but also through imagery conveying postmodern theatre.
